Encourage yourself to release stress this easy way:

First, observe yourself breathe in and out once.

Next, command control of one breath by slowing it down.

That’s right, slowly breathe in.

Then hold your breath briefly before slowly letting it out.

Then hold that outbreath for a moment.

Now repeat with this simple change:  count to four on each step.

Breathe IN 1, 2, 3, 4. Hold 1, 2, 3, 4. Breathe OUT 1, 2, 3, 4. Hold 1, 2, 3, 4.

Now let’s add a direction to your mind! Repeat that breathing-counting while looking for what feels like your top stress signal in this moment. It might be jaw tension, tight shoulders or back pain or something else. If you find more than one? Pick one!

Observe that sensation.

Next, repeat your breathing-counting while focusing on letting go in the area you picked.

That’s it, simply allow your mind to tend to that signal.

Your mind is powerful! You can form a habit of encouraging yourself to move forward despite stress by learning to tend to stress signals with quick episodes of nurturing self-care such as this brief breathing-counting exercise.
