Visualizing your future using today’s patterns

Studies show visualizing your best future increases optimism.

That’s been demonstrated to increase happiness in scientific studies — and the visualization work can help you figure out what you need to do to make that future happen. There’s a goals side of that to look at later! For today, it’s about increasing your level of happiness… and trusting yourself to put in small efforts consistently and persistently over time.

Sometimes our own patterns can help us know what to do to visualize a better tomorrow…

Here’s an excerpt from something I’d written about the patterns of today:

Say there’s a day when obstacles overwhelm me.

Here’s what I do:

I dare to peek at recent patterns.

I ponder deeply on teeny tiny teensy-weensy little accomplishments in recent days that moved me closer to my goals. Hey, sometimes I’ve got to work hard at that! But I do. Because it lifts me up.

I work at locating the corner of a recent day when I was inspired and motivated.

When you feel frustrated you might not be able to put your finger on what’s different on the days you get overwhelmed and the days you’re able to push through, right?

Peeking at recent patterns helps me find that out.

It’s simple. It works.

I simply think back on recent days deeply enough to find one small specific accomplishment that I’ve made despite whatever’s happening.

And often I feel that I can lift myself up simply by realizing that “I did that!”

Yup, sometimes I need to dig for more than one of them. Finding each one lifts me up a little bit more. Enough little bits add up.You’re worth it. Do the work to dig up your own examples! Practice today.

What’s one wee little tiny thing you accomplished lately that matters to you?
